Widener University Medical Scholars Program 2020

The Widener Medical Scholars Program provides pre-medical students with in depth knowledge of primary care areas (general pediatrics, general internal medicine or family medicine) and a broad educational experience grounded in undergraduate research. Selected students participate in an immersive, hospital-affiliated, medical school-like experience that involves shadowing physicians at Crozer-Chester Medical Center (CCMC) during the summer after their sophomore year at Widener. Following the shadowing rotations, Widener Medical Scholars remain on campus and complete a research project with a Widener faculty member. Candidates must be able to demonstrate genuine interest in becoming primary care physicians, specifically in the areas of family medicine, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics. Applicants should also have community service and medically related volunteer experience. Please visit our website for more information and admission requirements.

Participants in the program are limited to eight (8) broadly educated students each year. Applicants may be high school seniors who have already submitted their general application to Widener or currently enrolled Widener students that have completed at least half of the medical school pre-requisite courses with a 3.5 GPA or higher. Shadowing rotations occur during the summer after the sophomore year at Widener regardless of when students are accepted into the program.

The Committee is interested in what has led you to consider a career in primary care medicine and to prepare for it at Widener University. Please prepare a 750-word statement that summarizes the experiences, events, and thoughts that have led you to your interest in primary care medicine and your decision to seek admission to the Widener Medical Scholars Program. This should address your social experiences in school (curricular and extra-curricular) and community, your service and leadership experiences, and your specific interests in pursuing pre-medical study at Widener University.

To submit the Supplemental Application, please submit this form no later than January 15, 2020. Additionally, arrange for at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher to be sent by January 15, 2020. Selected applicants will be notified on or before April 15, 2020.
